  • Of all the festivals in the Christian calendar, Easter is the most important.

It's a time when Christians remember the death of Jesus on the Cross, and celebrate the day he rose from the dead.

The desert lands of Israel, where Jesus spent forty days alone.

This time is remembered in the period leading up to Easter, called Lent. It's when Jesus prayed and got ready for the work God wanted him to do: teaching others.

During this time Jesus went without food and water. At Lent, many Christians try to give up something they enjoy.

    Clergyman:
"Lent's forty days before Easter, when Christians take a special time out to think about their faith. Usually they do that by giving up something, perhaps something they like to eat, or to do something extra special – perhaps come in to church more often; do other things with other people... It's a time when we concentrate upon what really matters in life: not putting ourselves first, but putting Jesus first."

The last week of Lent is called Holy Week. This is when Christians remember the events that took place in the last seven days of Jesus' life.

Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday: the day that Jesus rode in to Jerusalem on a donkey.

Thousands of people came to welcome him by waving palm leaves in the air and laying them down for the donkey to walk on.

Christians today remember this by waving palm branches or crosses, and singing hymns as they walk through the streets in a procession.

The Jewish high priests didn't like Jesus and his teachings, so they asked the Romans to arrest him.

    Jesus was sentenced to death.

The night before his death, Jesus and his disciples had a final meal together called the Last Supper, remembered in Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting.

The next day Jesus was forced to carry a heavy wooden cross to the place of execution. He was nailed to the cross and left to die.

But the Bible tells how, as he was dying, Jesus asked God to forgive those who sentenced him to death.

The day that Christians remember the Crucifixion is called Good Friday.

    Clergyman:
"Good Friday is a very special and a very hard day for Christians, because we remember Jesus dying on the Cross. For us, it's right at the heart of our faith, because we know that in Jesus living and dying we find new life, and we look forward from Good Friday to Easter Day, when we know the reality of that new life."

Three days after he died, Christians believe that Jesus rose from the dead.

They call this the Resurrection, and they celebrate it on Easter Sunday.

    Boy:
"Easter's like the symbol of new life, as Jesus was resurrected."

    Clergyman:
"Easter Day is a very joyful day, and if you walk into any church it will be full of flowers and full of life, because Easter's the most important day in the Christian year when we remember Jesus – not only a long time ago bringing new life, but bringing new life every day for all those who turn to him."

Eggs are a special Christian symbol of this new life.

To show how happy they feel at Easter, Orthodox Christians paint and decorate eggs in beautiful colours and patterns.

    Children enjoy painting eggs too.

Lots of people enjoy giving and receiving eggs made from chocolate.

  • Before the video, ask the children to think about spring. What happens in spring? How does the season make them feel? Does spring feel like the beginning or the end of something?

After the video ask the children to describe what they might give up for Lent if they were asked to. What choice would they make and why? Do they think giving up something they like for a short time would help them? If so, how?
